In The Matter of The Death of Joseph P. Keliher

To The Honorable, The Judges of The Court of Common Pleas of Lycoming County:

Pursuant to the Order of this Court, the appointed committee has met and prepared resolutions, herein set forth and respectfully submitted:

JOSEPH P. KELIHER was born April 7, 1908, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, one of four sons of Timothy J. & Mary O’Connor Keliher.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, Villanova University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

He was admitted to practice before the several courts of Lycoming County in 1935. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

Although he was registered in the office of Marshall Anspach, who was his preceptor, upon the death of Otto G. Kaupp, Esquire, he assumed Mr. Kaupp’s law practice, and shortly became one of the most successful and respected attorneys at the Lycoming County Bar.

In 1937 he was appointed by District Attorney, Charles Scott Williams, to serve as Second Assistant District Attorney of Lycoming County. From 1939 to 1943 he served as First Assistant District Attorney. A Republican, he secured the nomination of both political parties for District Attorney in 1943, and served the County in that office with distinction.

He is survived by his widow, the former Margaret M. Cox, and three children, Timothy J. Keliher, Mrs. Matthew T. Gibbs and Mrs. John C. Lundy, and eight grandchildren.

He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation and its Holy Name Society.

While ill health prevented his practice of law in recent years, he is well remembered in his active days of practice as a fierce competitor, a formidable opponent, ever zealous of his clients’ rights.

Although not in good health, his sudden and untimely death on Thursday, October 30. 1969, shocked the minds of all of us who knew him, and it is with the greatest difficulty that we express our sorrow to his loved ones.

We therefore offer the following resolutions for adoption as a minute of this Court.

BE IT RESOLVED that on the death of Joseph P. Keliher, the Bar of Lycoming County has lost an able lawyer, the community has lost a valuable citizen and his family, a loving member.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these resolutions he spread at length upon the minutes of this court, and that a copy  he sent to Mrs. Joseph P. Keliher and each of his three children.
