To The Honorable, The Judges of The Court of Common Pleas of Lycoming County:
Pursuant to the Order of this Court, the appointed committee has met and prepared resolutions, herein set forth and respectfully submitted:
JOHN GRAFIUS CANDOR was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, January 27, 1879 and departed this life March 3, 1971 at the age of 92. His parents were Addison Candor and Catherine Grafius Candor. He attended Cheltenham Military Academy and Lawrenceville School. He was graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1902. Mr. Candor received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1905 and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar that year. He entered the law firm of Candor and Munson in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which had been formed in 1875 by his father, Addison Candor, and Cyrus Larue Munson. This firm was continued by John Grafius Candor and Edgar Munson, sons of the fathers respectively. After the death of Edgar Munson in 1931 John Grafius Candor continued the practice of law by himself. He was later joined by Harry R. Gibson and a new partnership was formed in 1942 known as Candor and Gibson. In 1943 Mr. Candor and Mr. Gibson and John C. Youngman formed the Partnership of Candor, Youngman and Gibson, which has continued the practice of law and is now known as Candor, Youngman, Gibson and Gault, the latter partner being John C. Gault. John Grafius Candor continued in the active practice of law until 1967 when he retired at the age of 88. Mr. Candor served as President of the Lycoming Law Association in 1931. He specialized in Orphans’ Court and Corporation and Banking Law. He served on the Board of Directors of the Savings Institution and the Northern Bank and Trust Company. His only political office was as a member of the Williamsport School Board for the years 1908-1909. John Grafius Candor was a devoted benefactor of the Williamsport Hospital. He served as a member of the Board of Managers beginning in 1937. He was Vice President from 1943 to 1956 and President of the Board of Managers of the Williamsport Hospital from 1956 to 1962. He has been Chairman of the Board from 1962 until his death. During his Presidency the Nurses Education Wing and Residence was constructed. Mr. Candor was an active outdoor sportsman during most of his life. He was a member of the Grays Run Club and an active participant in deer and bear hunting and trout fishing. He was a member of the Ross Club. While in his early days Mr. Candor did a substantial amount of trial work, particularly in defending negligence actions against the local streetcar company, his main legal reputation was gathered in the field of advising clients, both individual and corporate, with reference to financial matters. He was a careful practitioner, industrious and respected.
BE IT RESOLVED, that through the death of John Grafius Candor the Bar of Lycoming County and of the State of Pennsylvania has lost an able and esteemed member, Williamsport has lost a valued citizen and his wife a loving and faithful husband.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread at length upon the minutes of the Court of Common Pleas of Lycoming County and that a copy of it be sent to Mrs. Candor.
