John Murray Hill, a member of the Lycoming Law Association, died May 15, 1975.  A memorial service was held by the court.

In the matter of the death of John Murray Hill.

To The Honorable, The Judges of The Court of Common Pleas of Lycoming County:

Pursuant to the Order of this Court, the appointed committee has met and prepared resolutions, herein set forth and respectfully submitted:

JOHN MURRAY HILL was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on June 4, 1915, the son of Howard C. Hill and Mary Murray Hill. He died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, May 15, 1975. His father was a prominent businessman in Williamsport for many years until his death in 1943. His mother, Mary Murray Hill, died in 1965.

John Hill attended the public schools of Williamsport, graduating from Williamsport High School in the Class of 1932. Re was graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1936 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1939 with the Degree of Bachelor of Laws. Mr. Hill was admitted to practice in the several Courts of Lycoming County and in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1940. He also was admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Upon his admission to the Bar in 1940, he opened an office in Williamsport and engaged in private practice until 1941 when he joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an agent and remained with that organization throughout World War II and until 1946.

After the War in 1946, Mr. Hill returned to Williamsport and resumed his law practice. In 1960 he became an associate in the McCormick Law Firm where he remained until the Fall of 1969. During that nine year period, he carried the major burden of the McCormick firm’s real estate practice, in which field he specialized. In the Fall of 1969, he became Court Administrator for the several Courts of Lycoming County for a short time, after which he be came Field Counsel for the Veteran’s Administration in this area, which position he held for several years. Shortly after the Agnes Flood of 1972, the Small Business Administration opened an area office in Williamsport and John Hill joined the legal staff of Disaster Counsel in that office where he remained until the office was closed in 1973. Mr. Hill then became an Associate in the offices of Alfred Jackson and Scott A. Williams, which position he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Hill was active for many years in the Lycoming Law Association, serving on its Executive Committee, as Vice President and finally as President. He was a member of the Ross Club of Williamsport.

John Hill was a man of high principles and ethical standards. All members of this Bar who knew him well held him in high esteem, regarding him as a friend who could be depended upon. Endowed with a fine mind, he performed his professional work with care and precision. His congeniality enhanced relationships with opposing counsel in adversary matters and he was respected by his colleagues for his lack of abrasiveness.

In the last several years he combated and overcame personal problems which had vexed him for many years.

In 1943 Mr. Hill married Eleanor Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, who survives him. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary E. Loughery of Hendersonville, North Carolina.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that through the death of John Murray Hill, his wife and sister have lost a devoted husband and brother and the Bar of Lycoming County has lost an able and respected member; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED. that these Resolutions be spread at length upon the minutes of the Court of Lycoming County and that copies thereof be sent to his wife and sister.
