County students win awards for art and essays

The 2015 Law Day celebration was held at the Lycoming County Court House on Friday, May 1. The event was used to showcase the winners of the annual essay and artwork contest, co-sponsored by the Lycoming Law Association and the Lycoming County Paralegal Association. The winners presented their work for the first time to the assembled crowd.

Law Day Committee Chair Christian Frey presided at the event that was held in court room 1 before Judges Marc F. Lovecchio, Joy Reynolds McCoy, Judge Nancy L. Butts, Richard A. Gray and Dudley N. Anderson.

The event began with a long-time tradition - the "Law Day Singers" sang the national anthem. County Commissioner Tony  Tony R. Mussare read the official 2015 Law Day Proclamation, followed by comments by Commissioners Ernie Larson and Jeff Rauff.

Lycoming Law Association President Tammy Weber gave brief comments welcoming those in attendance.

Mock Trial program coordinator, John Pietrovito recognized members and coaches of the Montoursville High School Mock Trial team, the county winners of the contest. Team members Madi Myers, Daxston Silver and Jasmine Silver received best witness certificates. Team members Kourtney Phillips and Jasmine Silver received best advocate certificates.

The student art and essay contest winners were then called on to display their art works or read their essays.

The Grade K-5 essay topic was: "Why are rules important?" The winners:

Alice Ravert - Grade 01 - Lyter Elementary School
MaKenah Sagan - Grade 02 - Jackson Elementary School
Nyla Kutney - Grade 03 - Lyter Elementary School
Wyatt Fry - Grade 03 - Lyter Elementary School
Dylann Eck - Grade 05 - McCall Middle School
Liam Bastian - Grade 06 - Loyalsock Middle School.

The Grade 6-12 essay topic was: "If the Magna Carta was written today, what freedoms would it guarantee?" The winner:

Chase Dudeck - Grade 10 - Hughesville High School.

The artwork topic was, "Symbols of freedom under law." The Winners:

Arianna Larson-Waller - Grade 03 -Lyter Elementary School
Beckett Gilmore - Grade 04 - Schick Elementary School
Courtney Houseknecht - Grade 08 - McCall Middle School
Fatima Royal - Grade 12 - Williamsport High School

At the conclusion of the essay/artwork segment of the ceremony, the Judges expressed their thoughts on the student's work and the importance of Law Day in highlighting of the rule of law in our country.

A reception sponsored by the Lycoming County Paralegal Association, in the children’s honor, was held in the Juror's Lounge and brought the assembled group together for pizza and cake.
